Real Food

Real Food - Recipes, Food Ideas & Cooking Guides

Welcome to my Real Food/ Recipe Index. In 2012, my family and I began changing our eating habits, to include more 'real foods' or some might know it as a 'traditional diet' (along the lines of Nourishing Traditions/ Weston A Price). Here is the background of why I started, how we started, and a half yearly update:

A Note on the Recipes

These are recipes that I cook with often, our family-friendly favourites, to use what we’ve got in our garden & stockpile, to eat nutritiously, and preserve the abundance/ harvest too. Recipes for urban homesteaders, really! In line with my personal and family challenge, The Year of Eating Nutritiously, I am working on, and adding new recipes, as well as updating old recipes. In general, you will find that my recipes are:
  • Designed to be adapted to whatever seasonal and local produce you have, whether from your own backyard garden, or local farmers market, as well as making the most of an abundance, or using up leftovers. The recipes may also use preserves or ingredients from your stockpile too.
  • I make all my recipes Gluten Free, as my husband is Coeliac and I try to eat gluten free too. However, most of them are 'normal' recipes, really, that you can easily use your regular flour, pasta or seasonings in. I simply use a shop-bought Gluten Free flour mix, that has vegetable gum in it to help replace the gluten aspect. I also use Gluten Free baking powder/ cornflour etc.
  • I want to encourage others to make healthy and nutritious real food, that is less processed, less refined sugar, less food miles, but quick, easy and with more flavour! You will notice that I try to use SOLE food where possible, that is Sustainable, Organic, Local and Ethical, however, in the name of nutrition, there are some overseas ingredients I use, such as coconut oil and cream. If I buy products from overseas, I try to buy Fair Trade where possible.
